When and where: The Barclays Premier League match kicks-off from the Stadium of Light at 12.30 p.m. ET. Coverage will be provided by the Fox Soccer Channel, with a delayed online stream available via FoxSoccer2Go.
Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to record his first Premier League victory as Liverpool boss at the fourth time of asking.
Preview: It has been an incredibly emotional week for the city of Liverpool and Liverpool football club. After 23 years, the friends and family of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough Disaster, coupled with all Liverpool fans who were in attendance at the FA Cup semifinal back in 1989, received the truth about what happened on that fateful afternoon and why the real causes of the tragedy have taken so long to come to light.
Saturday's match may be taking place in Sunderland and not at Anfield, there is still sure to be plenty of emotion inside the Stadium of Light. While he has enjoyed a difficult start to his time in charge of Liverpool, manager Brendan Rodgers and his side should be able to count on passionate support from the traveling fans from Merseyside.
Rodgers is still trying to implement his short-passing, high-pressing style that he utilized to great effect at Swansea. His plans have been undermined, though, by a failure to sign a striker on the final day of the transfer window following the departure of Andy Carroll.
The Reds looked desperately short of firepower last time out in defeat to Arsenal, a result that left them on one point from their opening three games. The brightest spark for Liverpool this season has been 17-year-old Raheem Sterling, who has been thrown into the starting lineup and looked completely at home in his surroundings. Sterling's confidence may be boosted even further by a call-up to the England squad in the past week.
Sunderland have made great pains to ensure that they were not left short of goals by splashing out around £12 million on Steven Fletcher. It was a huge sum for the former Wolves striker, but Fletcher has already begun to pay back that fee with two goals on his debut last time out in a draw with Swansea.
Manager Martin O'Neil will be hoping that fellow-new-signing Adam Johnson can provide the Scot with plenty of ammunition throughout the campaign.
D: Gardner, Cuellar, O'Shea, Colback
M: Johnson, Larsson, Cattermole, McClean
D: Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique
M: Gerrard, Allen, Sahin
F: Borini, Suarez, Sterling
Prediction: Sunderland may be playing at home, but don't expect them to be overly expansive in their approach. Coupled with Liverpool's struggles in the penalty area, there is unlikely to be a feast of goals at the Stadium of Light. Liverpool could potentially have some joy down their left with Jose Enrique and Sterling likely to come up against the defensively lax Adam Johnson and make-shift right back Craig Gardner. Ultimately, though, both sides may be forced to settle for a point.
