Preview: Arsenal take on Southampton on Saturday looking to maintain their unbreached defense so far this season. Defensive vulnerability has for so long been the key weakness in the Gunners side, but the signs are that there will be far more solidity at the back this campaign.

Much of the credit has gone to new assistant manager and former Arsenal defender Steve Bould, with the center-back pairing of Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker looking particularly robust and keeping Laurent Koscielny out of the side.

Arsenal's strong start has also owed much the dynamic performances of midfielder Abou Diaby. After a terrible run of injuries, the Frenchman has showed what a dominating presence he can be when fully fit. The bad news for boss Arsene Wenger is that the 26-year-old has returned from international duty with a muscle problem. While it is described as a minor problem and Wenger has rated him as 50/50, given his previous problems, it seems unlikely that he will be risked form the start.

That will be a big blow to the Gunners, with the far less imposing Aaron Ramsey likely to take Diaby's place.

While Arsenal have been strong at the back, they have yet to fire on all cylinders up front. New signing Olivier Giroud has missed some big chances early in his Arsenal career and has admitted to feeling the nerves. Arsenal fans will surely hope that the France international can settle in with a goal of any description on Saturday.

Giroud could not have picked much better opposition to try and get off the mark for the Gunners. Southampton have started their first season back in the Premier League by conceding eight goals in three straight-defeats.

It is far from all doom and gloom though for the Saints with two of those games coming against Manchester giants United and City, especially as they held the lead in both contests.

There could be much excitement for Southampton fans on Saturday too with a debut set to be handed to record signing Gaston Ramirez. With the £12 million signing returning from international duty with Uruguay, he may only be handed a role from the bench by manager Nigel Adkins.

Prediction: The potential loss of Diaby could be significant and help end Arsenal's record of not conceding. But going forward Santi Cazorla could have a field day feeding balls through for the likes of Giroud and Lukas Podolski. Southampton's defense looks highly susceptible and Giroud could well get off the mark in a Gunners victory.
