Two people have been arrested after a baby girl was found with serious injuries in the refuse area of a block of flats in Wolverhampton.
A 24-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and a 32-year-old man was being questioned on suspicion of assisting an offender.
The pair are believed to be the mother and father of the girl, described by West Midlands Police as a "very young baby".
Police were called to a flat in in Wolverhampton to investigate reports of a missing child.
They found the baby in a nearby refuse collection with "very serious injuries". She was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital where she was in a critical condition, police said.
Det Insp John Smith said: "We are making a number of enquiries to establish how this young baby has come to sustain her injuries, and how she came to be found in the refuse area of the flats.
"The two people who have been arrested are related to the baby and we are not seeking anyone else as part of our enquiries."
