During his speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) 2012 in Charlotte Thursday, U.S. President Barack Obama delivered a passionate speech, in which he defended his record in office and stressed on the areas that serve as key differentiating factors between him and Republican contender Mitt Romney.

U.S. President Barack Obama's speech Thursday night earned mixed reviews, but his reminder of the campaign promises he ran on in 2008 made members of the audience emotional. Obama reminded the audience that all Americans, Democrat and Republican, have problems that can be solved.

Apart from winning the huge rounds of applause at the convention, Obama's speech also broke a few Twitter records for political events. The speech was wildly popular on the social networking site, eliciting 52,757 tweets per minute, which was a new Twitter record for politics.

The number of tweets relating to Obama's speech also helped the overall tweets for the Democratic National Convention surpass the 9.5 million mark, dwarfing those (4 million) seen during the Republican National Convention last week.

The President's speech not only beat Romney's previous record of over 14,000 tweets per minute, but also out-run first lady Michelle Obama's speech that itself created waves and saw over 28,000 tweets per minute.

In a blog post, Twitter shared some significant statistics relating to Obama's record-setting speech.

"Just the final day of the convention delivered roughly 4 million Tweets- approximately equal to the total number from the entire Republican National Convention... Many of today's 4 million Tweets were sent during the President's acceptance speech," read the blog post.

Here're the top five attributes in his speech that elicited the biggest Twitter reactions:

  • "I'm no longer just the candidate, I'm the President": 43,646 tweets
  • "I will never turn medicare into a voucher": 39,002 tweets
  • Discussing Medicare: 38,597 tweets
  • "We don't think government can solve all our problems...": 37,694 tweets
  • Quips about the Olympics and "Cold War mind warp": 34,572 tweets

"Today alone, there were more than 4 million Tweets written specifically about the convention. For context, there were only 1.8 million total Tweets sent globally, about all topics on Election Day in 2008," read the blog post.

Obama delivered a number of tweetable lines during his speech that include:

"The path we offer may be harder, but it leads to a better place."

"Four years ago, I promised to end the war in Iraq. We did."

"If you share that faith with me, if you share that hope with me, I ask you tonight for your vote."

As noted by Mashable, another tweet from Obama's official campaign account received over 18,000 retweets. The tweet read like this:

"No family should have to set aside a college acceptance letter because they don't have the money.- President Obama."
