Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has said he is happy with his summer signings, despite not landing any of his initial targets.
The English champions were heavily linked with Belgian playmaker Eden Hazard earlier in the season, only to lose out to Chelsea's £32m offer. They also targeted former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie and Basque midfielder Javi Martinez, neither of whom wound up at the Etihad; the Dutchman transferred to Manchester United in a £24m deal and the Athletic Bilbao product joined German giants Bayern Munich. City were also rebuffed in their attempts to sign Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi.
The 47-year-old former Lazio and Inter Milan boss, whose only signing up to deadline day was Jack Rodwell from Everton, went on a spending spree on the last day, signing Javi Garcia from Benfica, Matija Nastasic from Fiorentina, Scott Sinclair from Swansea City and Maicon from Inter Milan.
"I was frustrated, as it is difficult to do everything in one week or 10 days. When you finish the season, you have a meeting with the club. You talk about players but sometimes it is not possible to take all the players you want. You should have a different choice. But getting these players we have bought, I am happy," the Daily Mail quoted Mancini as saying.
Incidentally, another long-term target, Uruguayan Edinson Cavani, has committed to his present club, Napoli, by signing a new contract with a £50m release clause. The 25-year-old striker, who extended his contract to 2017, was also a target for European champions Chelsea.
The announcement was made as the player signed the new contract, in a specially convened press conference. Cavani, who has scored an impressive 66 goals in 94 appearances for the club, reiterated his happiness at staying in Naples.
"I thank the president who has believed in me and enabled me to remain in this amazing city. Every time I go out on the pitch I want to win. That's my mentality and that of the team," said Cavani, according to the Daily Mail.
