Manchester United's Win Over Fulham in Pictures; Van Persie's Goal Helps the Team
Helped by Robin van Persie's equiliser, Manchester United overcame the English Premier League shock defeat in the opening match of the season by defeating Fulham 3-2 on Saturday night.
Damien Duff silenced the home crowd and put Fulham in the lead by scoring a goal just three minutes into the game but Van Persie, who made his home debut for Manchester United, executed Patrice Evra's cross into Mark Schwarzer's net in the tenth minute.
Then Japan's Shinji Kagawa scored in his home debut, making good use of Mark Schwarzer's clumsy block of Tom Cleverley's shot. Further widening the lead, Rafael Da Silva headed Ashley Young's cross into the net just a few minutes before half time.
However, Nemanja Vidic's own goal after a mix up with goalkeeper David de Gea in the second half, narrowed the lead to just one goal, giving Fulham hope to draw the match with 25 minutes to play but Manchester United's defends held on till the end in spite of the key players warming the bench due to injuries.
Manchester United got a setback in spite of the win against Fulham with the injury of its main striker Wayne Rooney, who was sent into the field in the final quarter of the match. He injured his thigh after a challenge with Hugo Rodallega and was carried off the ground in a stretcher.
Saturday night's win is Manchester United's first point in the season after conceding 0-1 defeat to Everton in their Premier League opening match on Tuesday night.
Manchester United will now play Southampton on July 2.
