Sylvester Stallone is back on top at the box office. "The Expendables 2," starring the 66-year-old action star, took in $10.5 million on its opening day, dethroning "The Bourne Legacy" at the top of the box office and putting it in line for a $27 million opening weekend.

"The Expendables 2" stars Stallone as the leader of a band of mercenaries, including fellow action stars Jason Statham, Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren. After one of their members is murdered on a mission assigned by Bruce Willis, the group, backed by Chuck Norris and Arnold Schwarzenegger, attempts to hunt down a rival mercenary portrayed by Jean-Claude Van Damme.

While the sequel to 2012's "The Expendables" dominated the box office on Friday, it isn't quite the blockbuster that its predecessor was. While "The Expendables" earned $13.3 million its opening day, "The Expendables 2" only grossed $10.5 million.

The 21 percent dive could be a strong sign that the film won't be as profitable as its predecessor. Considering that the sequel cost roughly $20 million more than "The Expendables," this could be a bad sign for the film's financial prospects.

"The Bourne Legacy," last week's box office winner, experienced a strong dive in sales this weekend. While the spin-off/sequel to the Bourne trilogy earned $13.9 million on its opening Friday, the film fell 62 percent, taking in only $5.3 million on its eighth day.  The film is expected to make about $17 million over the weekend, bringing its total gross to somewhere around $74 million.

Also opening this week were "ParaNorman" and "Sparkle," which are nearly tied at the box office with each bringing in about $4.5 million. Box Office Mojo reports that "ParaNorman" is slightly ahead and is on track to earn roughly $13.4 million. "Sparkle" is expected to earn back the majority of its $14 million budget this weekend.
