As Robin van Persie is unveiled as a Manchester United player, Arsenal have to start preparing for life without their former talismanic captain.
Alex Song will need to be replaced if he is sold to Barcelona.
Manager Arsene Wenger has intimated that he has already made provisions for Van Persie's departure with the signings of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. However, there must be question marks as to whether Arsenal have sufficient strength in depth up front given their struggles in that department last season. With Podolski equally capable of playing on the left and Giroud untested in the Premier League, Wenger may still look to recruit.
Arsenal have been strongly linked with versatile Belgian forward Kevin Mirallas for some time and could now make their move.
The 24-year-old has confirmed there have been talks with both Arsenal and Everton, but that the opportunity for more regular first-team football at Goodison Park could sway his decision.
"It is possible to go to Everton, it is possible to go to Arsenal, I don't know now," Mirallas told Sky Sports News.
"I will speak with my manager and make a good decision for me and also speak to my family importantly.
"They are two big clubs of the Premier League, but for me it is more important to play every week. It is better for me a little bit at Everton.
"They [Everton] are a good team and it is a good opportunity because Marouane Fellaini plays at Everton who is my friend, but I don't know.
"Tomorrow I go to Greece, next week I go to the Premier League or go to Superleague Greece."
"I don't know at the moment, the decision has not been made,"
But, while Wenger confirmed that new signings could be made, he also refused to rule out the departure of Alex Song, who is being pursued by Barcelona.
"Both can happen," he said, according to the Guardian.
The loss of Song would represent a surprise given how he has matured into a driving force in the Gunners' midfield.
But just a day before Arsenal begin the Premier League season at home to Everton, Song's future remains up in the air.
"I don't know at the moment, the decision has not been made," Wenger added.
According to Catalonia-based publication El Mundo Deportivo that decision will be imminent. Their story claims that an announcement could be merely a matter of hours away after Barcelona representatives returned from London having all-but secured a deal.
It is reported that Song will join the Catalan giants for around €20 million (£15.75m).
If Song does depart then it seems very likely that Wenger will reenter the market to sign another midfielder.
One name that remains very much on their radar is Real Madrid's Nuri Sahin. The Turkey international has been given permission to seek a season-long deal by Real boss Jose Mourinho after failing to secure a first-team place since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund.
Arsenal and Liverpool have been battling it out for the 23-year-old's signature, with reports in Marca claiming that the Merseysiders had the edge because of manager Brendan Rodgers' good relationship with Mourinho.
However, the Daily Mail claims that Arsenal could still get a deal done; reports that Wenger did not rule out.
"He is one of the players we follow, Wenger said."
But Wenger could also make a decisive move for one of his long-standing targets Lucas Biglia. According to Sky Sports News, the Gunners have stepped up their interest in the Anderlecht midfielder following the likely departure of Song.
