Social networking sites have granted a platform for the public to speak their mind and express themselves. Yet some have used these sites to attack public figures. With-in the last year, a few celebs have been subjected to cruel posts on Twitter--some threatening to end their lives.

Here are five celebs that have endured death threats at the hands of Twitter users.

TMZ reported on Monday that actress Ellen Page was targeted in a vile death threat on Twitter.

“I’m going to murder Ellen Page. She’s dead,” read the post, now under investigation by the Los Angeles police department.

The “Two Rome with Love” actress was also threatened during the L.A. Film Festival in June after an unidentified caller informed festival organizers of their plan to kill Page.

In January of 2011, Selena Gomez learned that Bieber fever knows no bounds. According to TMZ, the Disney starlet began receiving death threats motivated by her romance with teen heartthrob Justin Bieber.

“Stay away from Justin paedophile,” wrote one user—referring to the fact that Gomez was 18 while Bieber was 17.

“I'm gonna kill ya in the night underneath your smell bed,” threatened another angry tweeter.

“Selena Gomez is dangerously close to a long, slow painful death,” was also posted.

In July, Shirley Manson (lead singer of Garbage) became the subject of over 200 threatening tweets when a user known only as @Gunn2urhead began harassing Manson.

According to the Daily Beast, some of the unsettling tweets included:

"Every night and day she's messing with me!!! can't take no for an answer!!!"
"Im gonna kill u b-tch!!!!!!!"

L.A police have been investigating the treats but currently have no leads as to who is behind the unsettling rants.

In February 2012, Miley Cyrus was harassed by an anonymous Twitter user known as @TheCyrusSlut who claimed that the teen sensation "dresses like white trash" and is "so f-king hideous." One tweet went as far as telling Cyrus “to die.”

E! reported that the harassment prompted the singer/actress to retort.

"I won’t tolerate someone telling me 2 die," she wrote. "Twitter needs to take some responsibility and make it a safe environment."

The recent Kristen Stewart cheating scandal has led to a slew of unfavorable Twitter comments against the actress.

Since news broke that the “Twilight” star had an affair with her “Snow White and the Huntsman” director, Rupert Sanders, some have channeled their disgust by threatening the star.

"What I find most alarming is that females are the ones who are truly fuming over this act of betrayal," wrote Toni Nagy of the Huffington Post. "Kristen is getting death threats on Twitter from thousands of enraged girls!"

Some Twitter users have gone as far as calling Stewart an "emotionless c--t" and "bitch" who should "die."
“If it’s true that Kristen Stewart cheated on Robert Pattinson I will kill her personally,” tweeted one angry user.
