With about a month left, all roads lead to the upcoming 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. With all the artists coming up with great music videos, it might look like MTV is having a hard time with their nominations. Despite this, crowd favorites have surfaced, with some of them listed below.

Leading contenders for the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards this September are Rihanna and Drake, with their music video "Take Care."

"The 'Take Care' singers both snagged five nominations, although Rihanna actually pocketed a whopping 11 noms when technical categories like Best Direction and Best Choreography are taken into consideration. RiRi and Drizzy are up for Video of the Year for 'Take Care,' while Rihanna has a second nomination in that category for 'We Found Love.'" reports Pop Crush about the duo's luck with this years [sic] video music awards.

 Other high profile artists such as Beyonce, Frank Ocean, Katy Perry, Lana Del Rey, and Skrillex also got multiple nominations. It is quite a surprise that Lady Gaga did not appear on the list, but it cuold be attributed to the fact that she did not release that many videos during the window.

Music videos by teen heartthrobs Justin Bieber and One Direction also came up to par, with "Boyfriend" and "What Makes You Beautiful" snagging nominations for Best Pop Video.

The MTV Video Music Awards first started in September 1984 as an alternative to the Grammy Awards. It has been dubbed as the "Oscars for the youth" since it has the power to draw millions from its demographic of teens to mid 20-somethings every year. The much-coveted award is an astronaut on the moon, conceived from the early commercials of MTV.

The music video awards show will be held on September 6, to be aired live by MTV.
