After throwing a photographer's iPhone through a window, British comedian and actor Russell Brand was sentenced to 20 hours of community service and given a $500 fine by a New Orleans judge. The 37-year-old actor did not appear in court for the proceeding.
Russell Brand may have made inappropriate advances toward a wardrobe assistant.
Reuters reported that Brand's lawyer, Robert Glass, said Brand could complete the sentence "at any charity or agency anywhere, whether it be in California or England." Brand, who has appeared in such films as "Arthur" and "Get Him To The Greek," was arrested in the Big Easy on March 15 after being accused by a paparazzo of ripping a phone out of his hand and smashing it through a window of a downtown law office.
Glass speculated Brand would fulfill his community service requirement by working with people who struggle with addiction. Brand has previously said he struggled to kick his heroin and alcohol problems.
He has previously been in trouble for attacking a paparazzo at an L.A. airport and was deported from Japan over his criminal history.
On March 12, a "highly irate" Brand pulled over his car to confront the man, who remains unidentified according to Corkman.ie. After a struggle with the man Brand grabbed the man's cell phone and smashed it, turning himself into police three days later. He was charged with one count of misdemeanor criminal damage to property.
Brand recently was given his own late night talk show, "Brand X." The comedian has taken his persona to FX where he lampoons everything from celebrity news to conspiracy theories. He's also been in the news of late because of his failed marriage with pop star Katy Perry. The couple's divorce was finalized in July.
