James Holmes made his first court appearance in the Arapahoe County Courthouse in Centennial, Colo., courthouse at 9:30 a.m. Mountain time (11:30 a.m. EDT) Monday, giving the world its first look at the man said to be responsible for last week's slaughter at a movie theater, one of the worst mass killings in the state's history.
Holmes, a 24-year-old former medical school student, appeared dazed and deranged, with his eyes at times downcast.
Dressed in a maroon jailhouse jumpsuit, the Colorado shooting suspect is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder and will be formally charged July 30.
While 18th Judicial District Attorney Carol Chambers told the Associated Press on Monday her office is considering pursuing the death penalty against Holmes, she cautioned that it will be months before a decision is made on capital punishment.
As psychological experts are weighing in on what they believe Holmes's deranged looks indicate, Chambers declined to comment on whether his expression may have been an effect of psychiatric medication or illicit drugs.
