‘How I Met Your Mother’ May Reach Season 9: 5 Women That Could Be Ted Mosby's Wife [SLIDESHOW]

Hit CBS series "How I Met Your Mother" is definitely returning this fall for its eighth season, but it turns out you might have to wait one more year to discover who the mother of Ted's kids are. CBS and 20th Century Fox execs are reportedly negotiating for the sitcom to reach an impressive ninth season.

According to Variety, execs are only in "preliminary talks" with no timetable in place. The talks to move past an eighth season of "HIMYM" might not even get off the table. Contracts for the five stars of the show, as well as creators and executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas end with the 2012-2013 season. While it's possible that the contracts can be re-negotiated, Perez Hilton reports that Jason Segel, who plays Marshall Eriksen, is "not interested in continuing on with the show after this year."

Thomas hasn't been sure of the fate of "HIMYM" since May, when he revealed to TV Guide that the show has a "Plan A and a Plan B" for season 8. If season 8 ends up being the final run for the show, Josh Radnor's Ted Mosby might finally tell the story of how he actually met his wife. If the execs manage to rope everyone in for another season expect another year of waiting.

"When it's the last season, we want to announce it from the rooftop and say, 'Hey, there are 24 more episodes left. They're awesome and you gotta watch it!" explained Thomas to TV Guide. "If it's the last season, you'll know it's a big momentous season from the first episode. There is a definite plan of how we want to begin the last season, as kind of a 'gasp!' moment within that episode. So yeah, we need to figure it out pretty soon."

While Ashley Williams did return as Ted's love interest Victoria last season, fans of the series know that she won't be sticking around for long in season 8 because Ted's future wife was roommates with Rachel Bilson's Cindy.

"How I Met Your Mother" returns for season number eight on CBS on Mon., September 24 at 8 p.m. To hold you over until then, we've compiled a list of who could be possibly be the "mother" (based strictly on their relationship to Rachel Bilson).
