"Baywatch" fans have a lot to celebrate as it was revealed Monday that German singing sensation and former leading man on the show David Hasselhoff will appear in the movie version of the show. The actor has been very vocal about his desire for a film version of the show, and now that appears to be coming to fruition.

David Hasselhoff has been associated with the "Baywatch" movie since the show went off the air in 2001. Instead of Pam Anderson and Carmen Electra, the movie could feature Justin Bieber and/or Justin Timberlake.
Unfortunately, The Hoff won't appear as the character audiences know and love. Instead of playing Mitch Buchannon, Hasselhoff will make a cameo as himself in the movie. He said he plans to play a "father figure" role, according to The Daily Dish.
"I've just met the guy writing the film," he said. "I'm going to play myself. We're trying to make a very cool updated version."
Last year it was revealed that Hasselhoff was bidding for the rights to the "Baywatch" script. It's not clear how much Hasselhoff and the writer will have to update. Maybe the lifeguards in the movie will communicate via cell phone instead of walkie-talkies? Either way, the show only ended just over 10 years ago.

The good news for Hasselhoff is that the movie will probably be able to build on the show's popularity. Unlike the recently remade "Starsky and Hutch" and "The Dukes of Hazzard," "Baywatch" had an audience that remains demographically somewhat desirable to advertisers. The filmmakers won't have to hope to recapture the magic of a lost generation, just appeal to the generation that watched the show while it was on the air from 1989 to 2001.
There haven't been any more reports about who will be cast in the film version of the show, although fans would no doubt hope for appearances from Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra, who are probably the biggest names of the babes that famously donned the red bikini.
Part of the reason Hasselhoff could only be cast in a father-figure role is the rumor that Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber have been spoken to about appearing in the film.
The IBTimes reported earlier this month that producers were trying hard for Timberlake, who could be cast in the role of a disgraced former Olympic swimmer. Timberlake has focused more on his acting career than music of late with films like "In Time" and "Friends With Benefits."
Bieber is rumored to be wanted for the role of Hobie Buchannon, the son of Hasselhoff's former character, Mitch.
It's hard to see him, or anyone, turning down the potential paycheck "Baywatch" could offer.
