"Harry Potter" has been beaten from the top spot as the fastest selling paperback by none other than the highly-acclaimed erotica novels, "Fifty Shades of Grey."
E.L. James' "mommy porn" novels are selling like hot cakes. The number of books sold has beaten the likes of J.K Rowling and Dan Brown's' UK record.
Fifty Shades of Grey beats Harry Potter as the fastest selling paperback in the UK
Despite the fact that there are still a lot of individuals who have only heard of "Harry Potter" now, the fame of "Fifty Shades of Grey" is enough to make them grab E.L. James' novels than that of J.K. Rowling's'.
"Fifty Shades" had started off as a fan fiction based on Stephanie Meyer's' "Twilight" series. However, because of the popularity of the trilogy, it had turned the Ebook into actual paperbacks. Statistics from last week show an estimated sales of 100,000 paperback copies sold. It is a number that both the "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" series failed to achieve.
In Britain alone, "Fifty Shades of Grey" has been ranked as the best-selling book for a whopping nine weeks. The book has also held the top three spots as the best-selling book in the UK paperback chart for six weeks. For selling out more than 10 billion copies worldwide, it's no wonder ordinary citizens to A-list celebrities are dying to know everything about the upcoming film adaptation of the novel.
"It is highly unusual for a book to sell so well without there being a film adaptation or the author being well known, like Dan Brown or JK Rowling," says Philip Stone, who compiles book charts for the magazine, "The Bookseller".
The book is the usual take on romance but with a darker, sado-masochistic twist that the likes of "Twilight" failed to deliver. This reason alone is why the books' sales continue to skyrocket and the demand for a film continues to rise.
"The books have crossed into the mass market. Clearly, people aren't embarrassed by it anymore," says a spokesman for the Nielsen Book-Scan.
So while "Harry Potter" still continues to be bought off the shelves by some kids and teenagers, "Fifty Shades of Grey" has been bought off by their mothers in hopes of "spicing up the bedroom". Kids be warned.
