Jon Stewart, Michael Moore And Other Surprisingly Rich People [PHOTOS]
Jon Stewart is a popular champion of the left, always ready to pounce on members of the so-called one percent.
He certainly had a field day back in January after Mitt Romney (finally!) released his tax returns for public view. In a "Daily Show" piece called the "Happy Clown Tax Jubilee," which looked at the GOP candidate's tax returns, the host and co-author of "America: The Book" poked fun at the Republican presidential hopeful -- who for some time hadged about releasing his 500-plus page tax returns. He eventually did, and the content whipped Stewart into a verbal frenzy.
"How in the world do you, Mitt Romney, justify making more in one day than the median American family makes in a year while paying an effective tax rate to the guy who has to scan your shoes at the airport?" Stewart said.
Does that sound unfair? To some, it might, but Stewart is hardly one to make the call, as the Daily Caller pointed out. Stewart, like Romney, in one day makes more than many Americans make in a year. The Daily Caller also pointed out that should Stewart continue on the money-making track he's on, his own wealth just might surpass that of Romney's when he's the older man's age of 65 .
Stewart isn't the only one person in showbiz who is way more loaded than we realized. Here are other prominent public people who, while being famous and well-known, have much fatter wallets than we would have guessed.
Jon Stewart
The host of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," Comedy Central's popular political program, makes $14 million annually, which is approximately $41,000 per day, according to a report in TheRichest.org.
Sara Blakely
Sara Blakely invented Spanx, which are arguably the ugliest shapewear to ever hug a person’s body. But they do cover up those embarrassing bulges and, as such, have made their way into many a dresser. Thanks to her out-of-sight creations, Blakely’s net worth is approximately $1 billion as of March 2012, according to a Forbes report.
Nancy Grace
Nancy Grace, who makes a living scaring the daylights out of the nation whenever someone goes missing on her self-titled HLN show, makes about $5 million annually and has a net worth of $18 million, according to CelebrityNetWorth.com.
Michael Moore
Filmmaker Michael Moore, whose hit documentaries include "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "Bowling for Columbine," doesn’t like to get into specifics when it comes to his personal finances. He got huffy last year when a Mediaite.com reporter brought up rumors that Moore’s net worth was about $50 million. Moore lashed out at the reporter for mentioning rumors, but he refused to answer the question. When pressed, Moore shook the reporter on the shoulder and said, “You’re just punk media is all you are. You lie. You lie to people. Stop lying.” He dodged questions about his net worth -- and denied being in the one percent -- in an October 2011 interview with Piers Morgan.
Judith Sheindlin
In 2007, Forbes magazine ranked Judith Sheindlin, who rose to fame as the title character of the reality courtroom television show "Judge Judy," as the 13th richest woman in entertainment -- with a net worth of $95 million. According to an Atlantic report, her annual salary of $45 million works out to $865,000 for each day worked. It may be even higher now since the contract for her syndicated show was renewed last year through 2015, Entertainment Weekly reported.
