At a time when TV heroes are dismembering the enemies' bodies and doctors in medical dramas are relying on science to save lives, a new series from ABC entered the scene with tales as old as time.

Once Upon a Time, a modern day adaptation of all the fairy tales you've ever known topped last season's genre shows with a 5.7 rating/9 share, according to Fast National average overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co.

Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Joshua Dallas, Lana Parrilla and Robert Carlyle top the brilliant cast of the series set in both Storybrooke and Fairy Land. The only child actor in the core cast, Jared Gilmore, plays the central character that set the beginning of the series.

Here are 12 of the most unforgettable moments from Once Upon a Time Season 1. Stop reading if you have not seen the entire first season. Be warned, spoilers ahead.

12. The Huntsman kisses Emma Swan.

11. The Evil Queen saves Snow White's life. (It 'really' happened.)

10. Snow White and Prince Charming seal an extra-marital affair with a kiss.

9. Cinderalla's fairy godmother is slain by Rumpelstiltskin.

8. Rumpelstiltskin reveals himself to the Evil Queen, breaking his strategy, risking everything - all for a chipped teacup, which is his symbol for his true love.

7. The Mad Hatter is left alone in Wonderland, and off goes his head.

6. Red Riding Hood "meets" the Big Bad Wolf.

5. Snow White saves Prince Charming from evil dwarves.

4. Ali Baba makes a wish and pays a price for it.

3. Prince Charming dies. And then his twin brother emerges to slay a dragon.

2. Emma Swan drags the Evil Queen to a storeroom, pushes her against the wall, and asks: "It's true, isn't it?"

1. Massive billows of purple smoke comes in to engulf Storybrooke... The Evil Queen smirks in thrill, delight, and hunger for vengeance... Magic is coming.
