Breaking the tough technical shackles, the highly anticipated untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 was finally made public by the Chronic Dev Team last week. The prominent members of the dev team brought the popular jailbreak tool "Absinthe" (recently updated to version 2.0.4) back into action, offering all the goodness of an untethered jailbreak to a majority of iOS devices running iOS 5.1.1, excluding the third generation Apple TV.
With the Cydia store getting bigger, containing thousands of interesting jailbreak tweaks, it's pretty easy to realize why an untethered jailbreak for the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system was so eagerly awaited.
Here's a list of a few of the gems available in Cydia store that would provide unique functionality for your jailbroken iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch running iOS 5.1.1.
1. Dashboard X
Dashboard X allows users to place widgets directly onto the SpringBoard (home screen) of the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It lets users to have quick access to things which were either not available previously or only available by invoking Notification Center. Dashboard X is available for $1.99.
Designed to make text editing, highlighting and selecting easier through different gestures, SwipeSelection lets you move the cursor around the screen by swiping a finger on the virtual keyboard. You can select texts by holding the "shift" key and dragging at the same time. The tweak is available free of charge in the BigBoss repository.
One of the main reasons users want to jailbreak their iDevices is to get custom setting shortcuts on the home screen or on the notification tray as in the case of iOS 5. SBSettings is the tweak that helps you access the commonly used settings without shuffling through the menu. It allows you to add quick toggles for commonly used features such as brightness, 3G, airplane mode, Bluetooth, and more. You can also add shortcuts on the home screen that lead you to the required settings screens without any jailbreak. SBSettings can be downloaded for free from the BigBoss repository.
Quasar is basically a window manager that allows you to manage multiple apps simultaneously in their own dedicated windows, just like you do on your desktop computer. Designed for use only on iPads, this tweak allows you to move the windows with a swipe. You can download Quasar from the BigBoss repository for $9.99.
Thanks to Unfold, you won't be sliding to unlock your iPhone; instead, you'll now be folding to unlock the same. This tweak brings a nice "Fold-To-Unlock" effect to your iOS device's lock screen. Unfold tweak is available for free.
iOS 5 lock screen notifications are nice until you get a text message with a lot of content, showing you just a glimpse of it. But the Cydia weak Reveal allows you to scroll through the contents of the message on the lock screen. You can also view the whole message right on the lock screen. In case of banner notifications, you can scroll horizontally through the message. Reveal is available for $1.99.
WinterBoard for iOS 5.1.1 can make the software even better with some new themes. It will allow you to alter the color of nearly any part of the device. WinterBoard is a third-party application developed by Jay Saurik Freeman. It can be downloaded from Cydia for free.
Using Zephyr, you can bring up the multitasking bar by simply swiping up from the bottom of the screen to the top of the screen. You can also switch between apps by simply sliding right to left or left to right on the device's screen. In addition, there are various other gestures also; for example, swiping up to close application. Zephyr is available for $2.99.
9. International Locations for Siri
If you think that all the Siri goodness with location services should be free for all, not just for iPhone 4S users in the US, Cydia tweak International Locations for Siri is the one that gives you the way out. It allows you look for nearby places and get directions to them using the voice-powered assistant. The tweak is available for $0.99.
Switchy makes the app switcher bigger. It brings space for an extra row of tiles and takes the page indicator lights to the bar that makes it two and a half times bigger. It also integrates all the music controls on one page.
In addition, Switchy includes a brightness slider and a button for clearing apps from the background. You can download Switchy for $1.00.
