Almost 700 people were arrested in Quebec, Canada as protests against the state government’s plan to hike college tuition fees intensify.
Of that number, more than 500 people were picked up in Montreal.

It was the largest number of single-day detentions since demonstrations commenced in February.

The Quebec government, which said it will not rescind the fee hike despite massive opposition, plans to increase tuition by 80 percent in increments over the next seven years.

Quebec has the lowest tuition requirements in Canada.
