The 1,000-horsepower Shelby 1000 from Shelby American debuted at the New York Auto Show 2012 to great fanfare Thursday, marking the 50th anniversary of the company.

The Shelby 1000 is the highest horsepower car from the company, and is available either as a street legal car with 950 horsepower or a track only car, the C/S version, with 1100 horsepower.

"From the engine, we completely tear it down," said Garry Patterson, Vice President, Operations, for Shelby American.

The Shelby 1000 begins life as a GT500. Only 100 will be made.
