It is official... black is the colour of the season.

If you needed any proof, consider the number of celebrities and fashionistas opt for the shade, at the 2012 BAFTA Awards ceremony.

From black metallic gowns to gothic glamour and elegant patterns, the red carpet featured interesting designs in different shades of that timeless colour.

Stealing the show were leading ladies Meryl Streep and Christina Hendricks, both clad in corseted black gowns from high-end designer Vivienne Westwood. Streep paired her corset gown with a matching sequined jacket and a clutch.

As predicted, actress Meryl Streep swept to the award for "Best Actress" for her performance in the film "The Iron Lady."

Adding to the glamour quotient of the event was Australian actress Melissa George, who wore a shimmering black gown by celebrity designer Victoria Beckham.

Small screen star Jessica Brown Findlay, on the other hand, opted for a modest long-sleeved full gown which she complemented with a chic make-up and hair style.

Meanwhile, British actress Helena Bonham Carter, a known quirky dresser, played it safe in black although she paired her dress with black fingerless gloves.
