No prizes for guessing why rapper Snoop Dogg has thrown his weight behind Republican presidential contender Ron Paul.

Snoop Dogg posted a picture of Paul on his Facebook page, Monday, with the caption "Smoke Weed Everyday," accompanied by a message "because I said so."

Texas Rep. Paul, who opposes the federal war on drugs, apparently has struck a chord with the rapper who is also a marijuana enthusiast in his spare time.

Marijuana and other drugs have always landed the rapper in trouble, ever since his high school graduation, when he was arrested for possession of cocaine. He was arrested and fined at least 8 times for possession of illegal drugs, ranging from marijuana to cocaine, in the past 10 years. Even though he announced he was giving up smoking pot - one of his image trademarks - in 2002, nothing much happened. He continued to get arrested for marijuana possession until as recently as Jan.10.

It is hardly surprising that "My Medicine" creator has decided to support Paul who believes that the states should be able to decide whether to regulate or deregulate drugs such as marijuana.

American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson too had earlier expressed her "love" for Paul, with a tweet: "I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last Republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican Party in 2012 he's got my vote. Too bad he probably won't."

Clarkson, despite being a Republican, said she "actually voted Democrat last election."

Apparently unaware of Paul's racist newsletter controversy and homophobia allegations, Clarkson wrote:  "I love all people and could care less if you like men or women. I have never heard that Ron Paul is a racist or homophobe."
