Just when Taylor Swift fans thought her big year couldn't get any bigger, the 22-year-old surprised all on Thursday by announcing that she is featured on the upcoming soundtrack to "The Hunger Games" film.

"Something I've been VERY excited about for a VERY long time is going to be happening VERY soon (and I'm not referring to Christmas)," Swift teased her fans via Twitter.

"And this is it, the big surprise . . . Go Get it! #TheHungerGames," she revealed.

Swift, along with Nashville duo The Civil Wars, are the voices behind the ballad "Safe and Sound."

With lyrics like, "Just close your eyes / The sun is going down / You'll be all right / No one can hurt you," the ballad is a fitting accompaniment to the film and its main characters, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson).

Based on the popular young adult trilogy by Suzanne Collins, "The Hunger Games" is the first film adaptation about Katniss and her survival in the post-apocalyptic world, complete with fight-to-the-death challenges, government struggles and corruption. The second adaptation, "Catching Fire," is due in theaters on Nov. 22, 2013.

Since Thursday's surprise of "Safe and Sound" from Swift, Twitter feeds have been exploding with initial reaction from fans of both the singer and "The Hunger Games" franchise.

"LOVE Taylor Swift's new single #SafeAndSound - especially after reading the book, feel like it captures the mood.. love her voice on it," wrote one fan.

"Never would've thought @taylorswift13 and @TheHungerGames would go together, but I kinda like it," wrote another.

Swift, who just turned 22, is coming off a huge year, thanks to the success of her third studio album, "Speak Now," which has sold more than 5.5 million copies worldwide. The singer has had quite an award-stuffed year, thanks to her three American Music Awards, a Woman of the Year honor from Billboard, and the Entertainer of the Year title at the CMA Awards. Swift is up for three Grammy awards in February, including Best Country Solo Performance.
