But it does spark a certain curiosity that will certainly urge period movie fans to watch Ruben Fleischer's "Gangster Squad" when it finally hits the big screen.

"I was just looking for an opportunity to try something new, and when I read the script, I was completely passionate about it. I think that passion and that love for Los Angeles and the love for this period of time and the love for this genre kind of swayed any misgivings the studio might have had," Fleischer told Total Film when interviewed on what pushed him to take on the project.

Fleischer started out directing music videos and made it big with the comedy adventure movie "Zombieland" in 2009. Other works include different "Funny or Die" webisodes and the robbery comedy "30 Minutes or Less" starring Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride and Aziz Ansari. He also writes and produces for TV.

The movie is set in the mid-1940s, where it follows the life of Jewish Mafioso Mickey Cohen portrayed by Sean Penn and his cat-and-mouse chase with a dedicated policeman.

Penn is a two-time Academy Award winner for "Mystic River" in 2003 and "Milk" in 2008. He became a prominent lead actor after landing the role in "Dead Man Walking." Aside from being an actor, his is also an active political and social activist.

Fleischer also said the cop O'Mara, played by Josh Brolin, who returns home from defeating the Nazis and sees America as the greatest country in the world. With all his ideals, he sees a gangster running his Los Angeles, with a skirmish at every corner.

Brolin became first known to the populace as Brand from "The Goonies." Although he quit Hollywood after his horrendous second film, he returned to acting with "Planet Terror" from the Tarantino and Rodriguez's double feature "Grind House" and the Academy-award winning film, "No Country for Old Men."

"Gangster Squad" is set to be released in the UK on Nov. 9, 2012. Fans are awaiting the trailer to come out early 2012 during post production.
