There was a backlash to the Federal Government’s proposed internet service provider level filtering project when a group under the name of anonymous attacked two major government websites.
This morning, the Australian Parliament House and Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy were hit by the attacks. The websites became sluggish and none responding.
The Anonymous group was reportedly using distributed denial-of-service attack according to the Attorney-General’s office. The Australian Parliament House website was down for about 50 minutes. It is currently fixed but still appears sluggish.
To combat this attack, potential targets consisting of Australian government agencies have been briefed and provided with recommended mitigation strategies in case of a real attack. In addition, the Department of Defence Cyber Security Operations Centre will continue to monitor and watch the situation closely.
The operation, named Titstorm, was launched in protest to the Federal Government’s mandatory ISP-level filtering plan.
"The Australian Government will learn that one does not mess with our porn. No one messes with our access to perfectly legal (or illegal) content for any reason," the group said in a media statement.
If the Australian Government feels that their plan should go on, it must be prepared to face further attacks and be able to combat them effectively.
