MILFORD, Utah - A Massachusetts-based company has federal approval to install 137 giant wind turbines in Utah's west desert.
The Bureau of Land Management says it granted rights of way Oct. 15 for transmission lines and a wind farm across 40 acres of federal land.
Newton, Mass.-based First Wind says it has a contract to send the power--up to 200 megawatts--to Los Angeles, Burbank and Pasadena, Calif.
Two hundred megawatts is enough to power about 160,000 homes, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
First Wind says it will start erecting the wind towers by year's end.
The BLM says it also issued a decision Oct. 15 that the wind farm would have no significant environmental impact.
