Fleetwood Mac’s hit album “Rumours” has aced at No. 2 in the ARIA Albums chart on the first week of reissue, almost trumping UK songstress Adele’s first album.
The shocking return of the 1977 album has sold an estimated $40 million copies after its comeback release. The Music Network is reporting that “Rumours” has sold Platinum twelve times in Australia alone. It is believed that Fleetwood Mac has raked in sales of over 850,000 copies.
The hit album was first released 34 years ago, recorded at a time when almost all members of the group was undergoing a hard time with their personal lives: Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were separating while John and Christine McVie were divorcing. The Music Network noted that the album was recorded at the time when Mick Fleetwood was in the process of divorcing his wife.
Skynews also attributed the shocking success of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” to the Australian premiere of musical drama “Glee”, using the group as its inspiration for the show’s opening episode aired on Network Ten last Wednesday.
Despite the surprise comeback, Rumours failed to outnumber Adele’s first album which dominated the ARI chart for four weeks.
