Kenneth Branagh’s interpretation of cinematic feature, “Thor” has claimed the top spot at the weekend box office overseas.

The classic old school action/adventure film, starring Australia’s Chris Hemsworth, English actor, Anthony Hopkins and Academy Award winning actress, Natalie Portman has reportedly raked in a stellar opening at $83 million from around 7,250 locations in 56 foreign markets.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film about a “powerful and arrogant warrior, 'Thor', who was sent to the earth after he was cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard” opened at No. 1 in the U.K. and Ireland at $9 million from 500 situations during its first five days.

It also edged its way to the top at the foreign theatrical circuit in the following countries:

• France : $8.1 million from 579 locales
• South Korea : $5.7 million from 513 spots
• Italy : $5.5 million from 455 locations
• Spain : $5 million from 377 situations

Adding to the film’s coffers are the ticket sales from foreign countries with smaller markets including Taiwan, which recorded a $2.1 million sales from 58 sites for a per-screen average of $36,206 and Vietname with the opener yielded $308,000 from 19 locations.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that the adaptation from Stan Lee’s comic book has also performed well in Singapore and the Philippines.

The Paramount Pictures noted that the film’s earnings from Vietnam also marked a “three-day debut record” for the small foreign market.

Meanwhile, ‘Fast Five’ has continued to race with ‘Thor’ at its opening weekend. Universal Picture's "heist action film" has turbo charged a ‘solid’ $45.3 million on its second weekend overseas.

‘Thor’ and ‘Fast Five’ are expected to race in a neck to neck battle to the top box office charts both in domestic and overseas markets.
